Philip LaVelle
I am interested in the seepage that occurs between the transference of corporeal and virtual realities. Influenced by both degraded digital images, such as Deep Fried Memes, and details of environmentally reclaimed urban surfaces, I use paint, inkjet prints, and digitized stencils to apply and remove layers of paint creating a sense of erosion and decay. The process of construction, separation, and removal manifests physical, tactile objects structured around contemporary ways of seeing through the digital lens. This labored procedure emphasizes the recessed marks, rendering the generically commercial subjects with a sense of abstraction and abjection. The ripping of the surface evokes flesh and violence while the imagery, and words, remain banal.
